    Gujarati Tuvar Dal Recipe

    Gujarati Tuvar Dal is my favorite gujarati type dal dish. This is spicy, sweet and sour. It contains jaggery and the cocum to get the sweetness and sourness to the dish. In any gujarati house a meal without dal is incomplete

    Ingredients for Gujarati Tuvar Dal Recipe

    7 cups water

    1 1/2 cup oily red gram washed

    1 tsp turmeric powder

    5 tsp salt

    1 tbsp red chilli powder

    1 1/2 tbsp coriander powder

    65 g jaggery crushed

    1 medium tomato chopped

    5 green chillies slit

    7 cocums washed

    2 tbsp coriander leaves chopped

    Tempering

    2 tbsp vegetable oil

    1 tsp mustard seeds

    1/2 tsp cumin seeds

    2 whole dry red chillies

    1 sprig curry leaves

    a large pinch of asafoetida (hing)


    Directions for Gujarati Tuvar Dal Recipe

    1 Pour 4 cups water into cooker. Add red gram, turmeric powder and salt. Stir once.

    2 Put into cooker and cook for 3 mins after getting full pressure, and then cool naturally

    3 Then open cooker and mash dal to blend with liquid

    4 Place the cooker with dal on high heat. Add remaining water (3 cups) and other ingredients except the tempering part.

    5 Reduce the heat and cook for 5 mins stirring occasionally

    6 For tempering, heat oil in a pan for 1 min. Add mustard and cumin seeds. When crackling, add red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida. Stir for a few seconds and pour over dal. Stir and serve hot
